How can we Reduce our Energy Bills?

With the colder weather arriving and fuel prices high, an extra jumper isn’t always enough – so, how can we reduce our energy bills?

There are many ways to be more efficient: including fitting thermostatic radiator valves, energy efficient boilers, room thermostats and much more. Every property is different and a Heating Engineer will make specific recommendations based on your requirements. You can also visit www.sedbuk.co.uk or www.energysavingtrust.org.uk for more information.

When it comes to boilers, those over 10 years old are considered inefficient, often costing more to run than newer models. Your boiler’s SEDBUK (Seasonal Efficiency of Domestic Boilers in the UK) rating will tell you how efficient your boiler is, and you can look this up by entering the name of the manufacturer at www.homeheatingguide.co.uk. When deciding upon a new boiler, think about which system suits your home before making a purchase:

• Combi boilers are usually the most efficient option depending on the size of your home. They cannot manage the high demand of larger properties.

• Open-vent boilers are more common in older properties and require a hot water cylinder, and cold water tanks in the loft.

• System boilers are suitable for large homes with high demand for hot water.

Only use a Gas Safe registered engineer to fit, fix or service your appliances, and always ask to see their ID card. To find and check an engineer, go to www.GasSafeRegister.co.uk or call 0800 408 5500. Remember to ask friends and family for recommendations, shop around and ask questions.
